8/29-9/1/17- After feeling like it would never happen, suddenly it’s hard to believe that this is our last week before school starts! Mostly we’ve been pretty much doing our normal thing- running errands, playing, doing stuff around the house- but this week Baylor got to try something new and exciting. He started talking gymnastics classes. Not “Mommy and me”- he does this all by himself!
It was so neat to watch him in a class environment where I wasn’t there to redirect him. I’ve got to admit I was a little nervous- would he follow directions? Would he enjoy it? Would he be willing to try new things? The answer to all of those questions was without a doubt YES!!!!! Mr. Troy, his teacher, has quickly become one of his heroes (he got home and immediately started pretending to be Mr. Troy).
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him enjoy an activity quite as much as he enjoyed gymnastics. He came out of that class totally pumped. He wanted to do again!! When it was time to get in the car, he told me “No, not go home! Do more jinnastics!” So we have had discussions about gymnastics only being for Thursdays and now he asks me every day if it’s Thursday. So it’s very apparent that he LOVED it. And the stamps on his hands and legs at the end pretty much sealed the deal.
As a sidenote, in feeling really confident that this will be a great way for him to build his strength. We had been trying to get him to jump forward (vs straight up and down) for months in OT and PT and was one of the missed milestones we were evaluating back in April that was causing him to test as a much younger kids physically. But in one gymnastics class, he watched- he tried, he tried again several times- and he got it!!!!! So often with Baylor, things just need to be his idea for him to be willing to put in the effort to be successful and I think this class will give him a lot of opportunities to see how he might be able to move and direct his body and let him explore that. Rather than being directed and corrected in a therapy session, where he pushed back a lot.
