10/9-10/10/16- Wow. We went on one of the coolest tours I’ve ever been on today. We drove about an hour out of our way to go to Weston State Hospital, otherwise known as the Ttans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. It is one of the oldest and largest mental hospitals in the United States. Construction started before the Civil War and it didn’t close until 1994. Fortunately somebody had the foresight to realize this was a piece of our history that needed to be preserved and a private person bought the entire place and turned it into a museum. We took two tours here- the historic tour that covered the 4 floors of the main hospital, as well as some of the outer buildings like the medical building. We also took a tour of the maximum security facility that housed the criminally insane. Some parts had been redone to look the way they would have looked in the late 1800s and other parts were left untouched. I have always wanted to go inside one of these old asylums and am so glad we jumped when we had the chance. We learned a lot and it meant a lot to me to get to see firsthand some of the history of my field. It was in some ways a very solemn and haunting experience and definitely a day we will remember! Afterwards, we drove up to Columbus, grabbed a pizza, and watched the debates. We were trying to top ourselves for nerdiest day ever, I guess. We woke up bright and early the next morning for Michael’s interview, then I headed out to coffee with one of my LDW friends. Afterwards, we got some lunch and finally headed home!!
