10/31/17- I put a lot of hours into this costume not knowing if this would happen or not. Baylor has been pretty anti-Halloween since decorations started hitting stores back in late August. So I knew this was a long shot. We prepared for a long time- we talked about it, read books, even wore parts of his costume as part of his daily outfits over the last month. Over the last week or so, he had become more excited to be Daniel Tiger, but I was nervous this morning. Sure enough, as we did his schedule, Baylor let me know that he did NOT want it to be Halloween. Luckily, a long nap changed his mind and he woke up in a great mood! He was ready for his transformation, so he actually ended up getting dressed a couple of hours before trick or treating ever started! So I let him “practice” trick or treating with our candy and by the time we were ready to go, he was sugared up and had the “trick or treat” and “thank you” thing down.
Daddy wasn’t home by the time trick or treating started, so Baylor and I headed out by ourselves. It was cold, so I had layered him under his costume. We went up and down 2 cul-de-sacs over about 45 minutes and headed back home. As we walked up the driveway, we heard a car and turned to see Daddy pulling up!!!! Well, we just had to head back out so that Daddy would get to go too. So we piled into Daddy’s car and drove to a street we hadn’t gone to yet and ended up trick or treating another half hour or so. His bag was almost completely full when we were done!
We have a fun neighborhood for Halloween! Lots of little kids here- there were well over a hundred running up and down the streets and maybe more than that! Lots of the kids commented on Baylor’s costume and he just glowed when a big kid knew who he was. He kept telling us he was a “trick or treater” and was so excited to be among the big kids. I’m so glad he decided to put on the costume and go. He had SO much fun. Candy is a recent discovery for him, so he was pretty excited about that, but more than anything he was just happy to be included and interact with so many people doing something fun together.
